This is an ancient Greek word for doll, first mentioned in a play by Menander. Thanks to an Australian doll collecting couple who sent me the source for the word. Another ancient Greek word associated with dolls is Eidolon, for idol. More to follow, soon. Here are some images to enjoy.

  1. Where is the swaddled doll from?

    1. This is a photo from my old archives, originally, I believe in the British Musem. It is an 18th C. carved doll, probably put together in the swaddled cradle by a Native American women. The Native Americans of the 18th and 19th c. sometimes used European or handmade local dolls that they traded for to dress as examples of their own costumes and customs. I really appreciate your comment!
