Shirley Temple's Knitted Doll with Lollipops for All!!
This week, we watched the Good Ship Lollipop sail away one last time, and many of us waved good bye with the dolls that came from the Love, Shirley Temple Auction. Then, we found ourselves Among Friends, and met some real characters! Frasher's auctioned lovely dolls, and UFDC was in full swing, with a famous designer creating an outfit for The Souvenir Barbie and free admission to both The UFDC Doll Museum and The National Toy and Miniature Museum.  Look for Tweets on Twitter #antiquedollcollectormagazine for what went on live at Love, Shirley Temple, and also check out Doll Museum and Dr. E's Doll Museum Blogs. Many related events like flea markets, doll artist conventions, and Anime conventions are also taking place. I also learned this week that Dr. Ruth collects doll houses and miniatures and Vita Sackville-West, famous writer in her own right and confidante of Virginia Woolf, collected toy soldiers. I love reading about positive spins on doll collecting in light of this weird trend about dolls being creepy.  Even Smithsonian online has broken down and written a "creepy doll" piece online, even though they have tried to be scholarly and objective.  I agree to disagree with them, though, that the whole mess not affecting the doll industry. Barbie sales are going down, according to Nightly Business Report, and fewer and fewer kids are collecting dolls or related objects. We'll still be at it, though, and I will be sharing this wonderful hobby with all of you.  Please let me if you are not getting a newsletter but scribed to one. I love hearing from you and try to answer all emails.  Please give me time to do so, and please remember my opinions are just that; I am not a dealer or appraiser, but a doll scholar, author, maker, and collector of long standing. Happy Doll Collecting!

Shirley Temple's Knitted Doll with Lollipops for All!!
My prize from the Shirley Temple Collection auction!  I love knitted dolls; my mother was great at creating them and dressing them.  Apparently, Shirley did, too.   Read about my treasure from her very own collection.

Dolls and Games go Hand in Hand
Geo caching, a hot new game, reminds me of an archaeologist's dig. It is similar to metal detecting and digging for bottles. With some adapting, doll collectors could really enjoy this game and trend.

Doll Museum Mantra

From G. Stanley Hall, "A Study of Dolls," as quoted in Laura Starr's, "The Doll Book:"

There should be somewhere a doll museum, a doll expert to keep the possibilities of this great educative instinct steadily in view . . .
